Laravel With New MariaDB

With Laravel, the normal workflow is:

Create the project with Composer
Create the MariaDB database manually
Configure .env
Run migrations

You can automate the database creation yourself though.

Example one-shot setup:

composer create-project laravel/laravel my_project --prefer-dist && \
mysql -u root -p -e "
CREATE DATABASE my_project CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'my_project_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'StrongPasswordHere';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON my_project.* TO 'my_project_user'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
"

Then update .env:

DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=my_project
DB_USERNAME=my_project_user
DB_PASSWORD=StrongPasswordHere

Then:

cd my_project
php artisan migrate

Laravel uses the MySQL driver for both:

MySQL
MariaDB

So DB_CONNECTION=mysql is correct for MariaDB.
