install Tailscale gentoo

On Gentoo, the easiest method is to install the official Portage package.

1. Install Tailscale

sudo emerge --ask net-vpn/tailscale

Gentoo maintains an official net-vpn/tailscale package.

2. Start the daemon

If you're using OpenRC:

sudo rc-update add tailscaled default
sudo rc-service tailscaled start

If you're using systemd:

sudo systemctl enable --now tailscaled

3. Authenticate

sudo tailscale up

A URL will be displayed. Open it in your browser, sign in, and approve the device.

4. Verify

tailscale status
tailscale ip
tailscale version

Useful commands

# Stop
sudo tailscale down

# Bring back up
sudo tailscale up

# View peers
tailscale status

# Ping another Tailscale node
tailscale ping <hostname>

# SSH to another Tailscale machine (if enabled)
tailscale ssh <hostname>

If you're running Gentoo with OpenRC

Check that the service is running:

rc-service tailscaled status

If `emerge` cannot find the package

Update Portage and sync first:

sudo emerge --sync
sudo emerge -avuDN @world
sudo emerge --ask net-vpn/tailscale
