install paperclip

Paperclip is not currently packaged in the official Gentoo Portage tree. The recommended installation method is via Node.js and npm/npx.

1. Install Node.js (if not already installed)

emerge --ask net-libs/nodejs

Verify:

node --version
npm --version

Paperclip requires Node.js 20 or newer.

2. Enable Corepack and pnpm

npm install -g corepack
corepack enable
corepack prepare pnpm@latest --activate

3. Install and onboard Paperclip

The easiest method:

npx paperclipai onboard --yes

This command:

Downloads Paperclip
Creates ~/.paperclip/
Initializes the embedded PostgreSQL database
Starts the server on port 3100

4. Start Paperclip later

npx paperclipai run

Then open:

http://localhost:3100

5. Optional: Install the CLI globally

Instead of using npx every time:

npm install -g paperclipai

Then you can run:

paperclipai onboard
paperclipai run
paperclipai doctor
paperclipai configure

Verify installation

paperclipai --help

or, if using npx:

npx paperclipai --help

Since you've already installed tools like n8n, OpenCode, llama.cpp, and Ollama on your Gentoo system, your existing Node.js environment should already be suitable for installing Paperclip.
