Core CICS Performance Tools

Type: Real-time monitoring

What it does:

  • Tracks transactions, response times, CPU, waits
  • Alerts on bottlenecks and slowdowns
  • Originally developed by Candle Corporation (later acquired by IBM)
  • Used for live system health + problem detection

👉 Think: “What is happening right now?”

Type: Offline analysis/reporting

What it does:

  • Analyzes SMF records from CICS monitoring
  • Produces detailed reports (transaction, wait time, resource usage)

Key reports include:

  • Performance List / Summary
  • Wait Analysis (find bottlenecks)
  • Transaction Profiling
  • Workload Activity

👉 Think: “What happened and why?”

Components:

  • CICS Monitoring Facility (CMF)
  • CICS statistics
  • CICS trace

These generate the raw performance data used by tools like PA.

Core capability for baseline performance tuning.

👉 Think: “Raw data collection layer”

  • RMF (Resource Measurement Facility)
  • SMF (System Management Facility)
  • z/OS Workload Manager (WLM)

Used alongside CICS to:

  • Measure CPU, I/O, memory
  • Correlate system-level performance with CICS workloads

👉 Think: “System-wide performance context”

  • CA Sysview for CICS (Broadcom)
  • BMC MainView for CICS
  • IBM Z APM Connect

These add:

  • Dashboards
  • Cross-system correlation
  • Automation
